PM Abiy Ahmed GRED inauguration Speech

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed delivered a powerful and symbolic speech marking the completion and inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), emphasizing it as a national milestone and a testament to Ethiopian resilience, unity, and ambition.

The GERD inauguration was celebrated as a historic turning point, symbolizing not just a technical achievement but a triumph of spirit, perseverance, and collective effort.
Abiy described the dam as Ethiopia’s “dawn”—a metaphor for a new era of national renewal, self-reliance, and continental pride, reflecting the country’s long-standing dream of progress.
He highlighted that the project required extraordinary sacrifice, including the dedication of workers, the courage of security forces, and the endurance of the Ethiopian people through immense challenges.
The completion of the GERD was framed as a starting point, not an endpoint—urging all Ethiopians, from farmers to professionals, to channel their energy and creativity into building a prosperous future.
Nigat Lake (Dawn Lake), formed by the dam, was described as a reflection of what lies ahead—symbolizing hope, potential, and the promise of a brighter future.
Abiy emphasized that Ethiopia’s resurgence—a dream of ancestors and a struggle of generations—has now become reality, and that the nation’s image, narrative, and geopolitical stature have fundamentally changed.
He extended heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed, stating: “Those who initiated, supported, and fought for this project have etched their names into the history of the Renaissance Dam.”
The speech also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to regional cooperation, inviting Egypt, Sudan, and other Nile Basin nations to join in the celebration and engage in constructive dialogue for shared progress and mutual benefit
